Putting the Swag in Science with Shiseido and Benchling
Welcome back to Swag in the Wild!
Swag in the Wild is our Swag Expert-curated blog series sharing some of the coolest, funniest, wildest swag our clients and partners have worked on. But that’s not the best part. What we love most is seeing a swag project come to life in the real world after it leaves SwagUp HQ!
Which reminds us of one of the earliest discoveries we made at SwagUp: there is a ton of value in using swag to welcome new team members and build brand loyalty. This is something that seems like common sense, but at the same time, can feel easier said than done. How do you get started? What swag would people actually want at this point in the relationship with your company? Can you trust this swag to be good?
So here’s a tip: our Swag Experts can help you get specific and find swag that captures your brand values. But sometimes it doesn't have to get that complicated.
When you make a decision to go with high quality swag, the next most important thing is oftentimes not “what swag” but rather “how you use that swag.” And that’s what Shiseido and Benchling get right. Let’s get to it!
One of the largest cosmetic companies in the world, Shiseido is a top international brand specializing in a variety of products including skin and hair care. The company invests in cultivating future talent in a variety of ways, including offering academic support to leading female scientists and working with undergraduate and MBA interns to drive innovation.
Started in the MIT dorm room of Sajith Wickramasekara, Benchling is the cloud-based informatics platform taking on the mission to supercharge life science research and power the biotechnology revolution. Built on the understanding that while science has evolved, software hasn’t, Benchling provides tools that support the way scientists actually work.

Shiseido Community Volunteer Shirts
PURPOSE: Shirt Swag for Shiseido Community Program Volunteers 🤝
SWAG SUCCESS INGREDIENTS: Bulk Swag, SwagUp Platform, Community, Custom Branded Swag
Shiseido employees volunteered as part of their community program to host a cool tour — including a walkthrough of the facility, luncheon and networking session with Shiseido staff — for the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey (GSNNJ).
Kudos to the Shiseido team for supporting talent development early! We’re impressed with this company’s employee culture and how employees invest their time to help these girl scouts learn about the science behind the skin care and beauty industry. A clear win for young talent interested in what a STEM career could be like at Shiseido!
We’re also big fans of the swag pick Shiseido made for their community volunteers: the Bella + Canvas tee. A perennial favorite among our clients for good reason, this shirt is a solid swag choice for its silhouette-flattering retail fit and simple tear-away label (because label itch sucks).
Plus with 100% Airlume combed and ringspun cotton, the Bella + Canvas tee is the natural choice to make when you’re looking for that ultra soft t-shirt feel.
The takeaway: Create swag that supports the initiatives your company cares about, whether that’s for a community volunteer program or at your next networking event. Because there’s no better time to show off what your brand cares about!

Benchling New Hire Swag Packs
PURPOSE: Fresh Swag for the Newest Talent on the Benchling Team! ✨
Looking good, Benchling! This talented team is making big moves in the life sciences R&D space. And with a recent investment from Lux Capital, Benchling is not slowing down anytime soon.
We love the mission driving this team forward, and love even more the strong culture this group has created when gathering their team together. Because swag is more than custom branded apparel - especially when used to bring people together around a cause bigger than themselves.
Props to the Benchling team for celebrating their newest teammates with some fresh Benchling swag including high quality picks like custom knit socks, an eco-fleece signature zip hoodie, and a threaded bamboo lid glass water bottle.
But you don’t need us to tell you this is great swag - just look at the Benchling team! If it’s quality, your team will love wearing it on their own. (And it doesn’t hurt that it makes snazzy candid team photos like this a breeze...) From day one to anniversaries, swag is a great employee appreciation tool and an even better support gesture for powering through the most challenging and rewarding projects. After all, consistency is the key to success!
